3 Tips For Long Term Change

  1. Pace yourself. It’s easy when you start a new endeavor to want to go in hot and change EVERYTHING. In my (personal and professional) experience that lasts about 2 weeks and then everything falls unless you have unbreakable determination and even then, most people need very attentive accountability. When things get tough or don’t work out how you thought it would, it’s very easy to become discouraged and slip away- feeling defeated. Don’t play that game! Start with small attainable goals and build from there!

  2. Stay consistent. This is the number one factor that has surprised me the most over the years. I have seen the most change in my own training and my clients when we continue on- rain or shine, easy or hard, good mood or bad mood, etc. Some days our goals seem mundane and boring, even burdensome. Learn where to give yourself a break and when to trek on in unfavorable seasons. Remember your training and nutrition do not make you who you are, so it’s ok if it doesn’t always bring full satisfaction. Also know when it’s time to make a change. Maybe it’s different programming, learning when to rest or when to ramp it up. Talk to a trusted trainer or coach to help you navigate. Sometimes the answer isn’t what you thought, but exactly what you need.

  3. Enjoy the journey. Isn’t this hard some days? This has been one of my struggles, I always want to arrive, get to my goal.  Through injuries and life circumstances I’ve been forced to slow down. My expectations have been disrupted (like all of us, right?) and it’s been so liberating to say, “It’s ok to give my body and mind what it needs”, rather than continue down the road of, in my case, training very hard either around my injuries (that’s ok to an extent) or pushing my already shot adrenals to the point of almost a panic attack. The return on that was lots of affirmation from people commenting on what was going on on the outside, while inside I wasn’t well. Over the years I’ve worked hard to put those things aside and have let go of a lot of old presuppositions that weren’t serving me and I feel more free to keep moving forward and enjoy the journey!

Keep going! One step at a time! 🥳💯
